Thanks Götz for remembering that date! 20 years … wow! When I started this, I never thought ngIRCd would become a real project that anyone but me would use!
So probably this is a good opportunity for some status update:
I still like ngIRCd, have it running on my server and use it more or less every day – at least for having my IRC sessions idling around.
On the other hand, most of the IRC channels I used to be active in became pretty empty over the past few years, and most of the chats and discussions I'm interested in now take place elsewhere. So IRC is not a big priority for me anymore. And so ngIRCd is not a big priority for me anymore, too …
I know of quite a few patches floating around (thanks for all of you sending them in!) that have not been dealt with to date. And I know a few bugs and glitches in the code base myself which would be great to get fixed/enhanced, too.
I'd like to make one more release in any case, to reword the phrase "ngIRCd is being actively developed" in the README file and on the homepage to something more realistic … but I'm not sure how realistic it is that I will start doing "real" work on ngIRCd again, like integrating the patches mentioned above!?
Probably this is not the best news, but on the other hand ngIRCd works not bad at all for many years in some installations - at least in my own ;-) - and this won't change.
So you might wonder how you can help or what could get some momentum back to the project?
For me, best is to have our development, issue tracking and patch/pull request discussions taking place on GitHub (https://github.com/ngircd) – this makes it easy for me to not loose track and to have all required information in one place. So a good and very helpful first step is to create pull requests for all patches pending review or integration, for example. And to create and enhance issue/bug/enhancement reports as well.
And, of course, I'm always interested in feedback and suggestions of everyone running ngIRCd or working with it!
Let's see how ngIRCd is doing and if there will be more years to come!
